Evaluation Question 6 - What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Overall I have learned a great deal with technology from the begining of my portfolio. It has helped develop my ideas, organise my thoughts and made my end product much more successful if I hadn't used this technology. Although some software and hardware was quite difficult to use as first the end result was rewarding and beneficial to my learning.

Question 5 How did you attract your audience?

When looking at my primary research and my magazine I have tryed to take on account what people have said. I have also looked at professional magazines in contrast to mine to see if it was as high a quality as a professional music magazine. My primary results said that people wanted more female artists to be used in and on the front of the magazine, which I have done with my models Allison, Jessica and Sarah. They also said they wanted bright colours and bold texts, I have tryed to do this with the red and the black that are both in bold eye catching fonts. Some other results said that they liked having a band index in the magazine so that they could turn to their favourite bands page and one other result showed that they liked photographs to look different and appealing. For the article they said they would prefer it to be more personal and specific to the artist so that they could relate to the artist.
When looking at the professional magazine NME my magazine does have some high quality designs to it.
For example with the front cover both my product and NME use the colour res which is very eye catching and bold. They have used banners at the top and bottom of the page separating sell lines. However there are differences such as the border all the way around the magazine and the large banner holding most of the sell lines in on the left hand side. All of which make the magazine look attractive and appealing, but I have still incorporated things that a professional magazine would consider and made my own music magazine that after research and planning could be seen as a real music magazine.

Evaluation Question 4 - Who would be the audience for your media product?

I have created a mood board on olioboard by using images that repesent the audience my magazine is aimed at. My audince are people who like to go to gigs and festivals, they enjoy dressing good and shop in places like topshop and wear brands like converse, keds and levi's. My audience enjoy films like 300 days of summer and juno, the actors and actresses are similar to my audience. They enjoy listening to bands such as foster the people, vampire weekend and are similar to the cast of skins who enjoy life, partying and listening to music.

Double page spread improvements

My font size for my article is now size eight which is typical for magazines. It also means I can put more into my article i have also changed the color of the questions from black to red so they are easily distinguished from the answers.

The images are now the same with and I have deleted the border around them so they are bigger.

Cover improvements

The first change I have done is with the text at the bottom, I have enclosed it in a black box and change the font to white to make it stand out more. I have also made it the same size as the text in the sky line of my magazine.

I have also created a large sell line to fill the space on the the left hand side and the middle. I have put it in a large font side of 18 and again to math the house style it is in red. One other thing I have one to all my text is to bevel and emboss it so that it stands out more against the background.

Contents improvements

For my contents I have now aligned all my numbers and text to make it look professional. I have also used lines to separate each different section of the contents page and put lines at the top and the bottom where the contents ends to make it more clean cut.

The text is now at a size 8.5 and the titles of each page being size 10.

The band index has been widened to the end of the left hand side and I have decreased the text to a size 6 so that I could fit more band names.

Rough cuts feedback

In order to improve my magazine I have been told to improve on the following:
  • For my front cover I need to make a banner for my bottom text so that it is more clear
  • I need to produce a large sell line across the left hand side and middle of the magazine to improve its appearance
  • For my contents page I need ensure that everything is aligned, I need to box it in or make a border to make it more clean cut and professional.
  • I need to ensure that all images are in my magazine
  • To make the font smaller preferably size 8 so that it is similar to a professional magazine and lastly for my contents to widen my band index to fill more of the page rather than there being unnecessary blank spaces.
  • For my double page spread I need to make the images the same width apart, so that they are consistent with one and other
  • I need to make the fond smaller to a size 8 or smaller to make it look more professional and I need more colour in the actual article to make the questions and answers clear.
But overall my magazine is consistent and the photo shot was creative and interesting.

    Double page spread construction

I have used a distressed font again for the title of the article and named it head girl so that it will keep people guessing. I have wrote my article in new times roman as it is what magazines typically use in their articles, the font size is also size 10 which is also typical of magazine articles. I have made the first letter of the article larger than the rest at font size 20 because again this is typical of the magazine that I have been looking at.
I have added quotations from the article that will attract the audience and make them want to read it, this font is in size 18.

My second double page is a series of photos I took in Hardwick Park. I have used smaller portrait photos and one verticle photo to fill the bottom of the page. I have also produced a border that goes with the house style.

The last things I added where a page number, the date and the magazines name which is identical to the cover pages only smaller.

    Contents page construction

This is the start of my contents page. I have used the same font urban jungle for the title of the magazine. The contents font however is more simple and black. The numbers are another similar font named 28 days later that again looks distressed but the same of the font was more curved and better for numbers. I have then put red boxes behind the page numbers and turned the numbers white to make them stand out. There are also boxes for the different images and text ready for when I upload them and write the contents.
In this screen shot I have now added text. For the titles I have used the font 28 days later again and made it larger and bold. The detailed text below the titles are in a font named Trajan which is much more clearer and simple. This font is also used in the band index as I think it it simple and clear making the small writing easy to read. I have again used red boxes with white page numbers in them to make the page numbers very clear and bold. I have also added a subscription part at the bottom. The font her is again 28 days later because again it has that distressed look and it is still large and bold enough to show how important the text is. I have then added a smaller version of the magazine with the subscription which is typical in magazines that are trying to promote subscription to their magazine.
I then have inserted different images of different artists in to the spaces. The fact that i have also put a page number in the images aswell makes it quik and easy for the reader to access the part of the magazine they want to read. I have placed all the images up so that they are aligned and not over lapping in any way.

    Double page spread photography

For my double page spread I wanted the images to look different and free but I still wanted my model to look mysterious and soulful therefore I took some images outside in a nature park. This first image is the one of the smaller images that will go at the top of the second double page spread. I like the use of the ruins in the image it makes the image look timeless I have also made my model look casual and not provocative, she fits in with the rest of the natural look of the environment around her. Again I have asked her not to look directly at the camera to make her look mysterious and because she is higher up on the ruin I means that the readers have to look up at her showing how dominant and her status with in music.
The second picture again is small and will be at the top of the page. This one is much more simpler with only the overcast sky which I think is appropriate as it gives a sense of mood and makes the image seem quite sad. This is what i want to prevea the artists music which is quite emotive and soulful. I have also got the trees in the background to make the background very beautiful and natural which is also shown in the natural look of the model. Again I have taken a low angle shot of her to give her status and she is not looking at the camera again to make her mysterious. The pose the model is pulling is also very dominant and powerful as she is not slouching but has her hand on her hip making her look confident and powerful.

The last image is much longer that the rest therefore I will have to put it along the bottom of the double page spread. It is of my model on a chez long outside. I really like the background with the winter trees it makes the image look very natural and beautiful. I purposely choose this dress so that it could drape over thing as flow in the wind and I think it makes the model look very elegant her. Again I have taken the image for a low angle shot to give her status and power.

    Contents page photography

For my contents photographs I have used a variety of different models. I have produced a band image and other images of solo artists in different angles and focuses. This first image is a media close up of the model form the front page, I have used this because it gives continuaity with in the magazine and you can see most of the models pose and her body language and clothing.. I used this image because it gives more varitey of images and becasue it is a contents page different depths of photography can be used.

This next image again is a close up of one of the models. This time however the shot was in a different location. The model is not taken up by the whole shot and is in only the right of the image with the background of a lake and trees, I think the background makes the image look idealic, open and free which could be sybolic of the artists music. Her hair is bright ginger and also makes the image look very intersting and exciting. However because she is not looking dorectly at the camera it gives her a sence of mystery making the readers intrigued which alot of indie magazine tend to do with their models.

This next image is a median close up of the band. The lead singer is put infront of the rest of the band showing the dominace and staus he has among the others. They are all looking directly at the camera which means they have direct contact wIth the reader, there look is quite sullen and mysterious which again draws the reader in.

    Front cover photography

The following images I have produced to see which one looks the best. I have taken a portrait photograph of my model in the studio. The posses she is doing is quite dominant and confident. The first is a close up of the model with her hands in her hair. She is looking directly at the camera so that people will be draw into the magazine because there is direct eye contact. I think this image is appropriate as her hair is not covering any of her main features and its different as its not just a pain image of the models face, which makes typical in indie magazines as they tend to be a bit different and interesting seducing the reader.

This next image is also a close up and a portrait image. This time I have asked her not to look at the camera but to look down at the ground. I quite like the way in which the light has picked up her hair however I feel that because there is not direct contact with the readers its does not have the same affect as the other image because it does not address the reader. Therefore I won't be using this image as the front cover.

This is the third image I consider using for my front cover. It again is a portrait close up of the model. I like the way it is different with the use of the models fingers as well in the shot. She isn't looking directly at the camera which means there is no direct contact with the reader therefore I feel the first image is more interesting and will go better with the layout of my magazine.

    Front cover construction

The following screen shots are of the process of making my magazine. I have started with the name of the magazine, I have used this bright red colour that I used in my flat plans, I have found this font on dafont.com and its called urban jungle. It has the distressed look I was looking for.
I have now included a sky line with a catchy sell line attracting the audience. There are also other sell lines on the front cover, one of which i have put into a circle so that is stands out more without having to increase the text. All the sell lines have the same font which is also from dafont.com and its called soul mission, it again is distressed but doesn't have the bottom of the text deteriorating away as i found the writing wasn't very clear to read. I have also added text at the bottom saying plus with lots of bands suggesting how much there is I the magazine.

I have also added a bar code with the date, price and magazine website. These are in a simpler font to soul mission and urban jungle which is called Ariel black. I've done this because it needs to be clear and simple because its so small.

I then added my image. I have made it just the right six so that the reader can see part of her arms as well and I have made sure there are no obstructions to her face form the sell lines or the mast head.

    Article Draft

Later Today: 20th February, 2012, and everything looks like it’s going so well for Jessica Hart. Today she rolls into the interview room at Pitch looking ready to go to a gig with her bright red hair bouncing around her bright blue eyes. He recent success mean that she has already hit not just Britain but America and Europe as well with her spin tingling album Forgotten Souls. It has taken her a while to get to where she has today with grungy gigs in small pubs and bars and to now gig in the 02 academy at London and Wembley Arena. She has sold over 100,000 of albums worldwide within the last few months and is about to tour the UK this year.
Emma: Hello Jessica and congratulation on your current success with Forgotten Souls.
Jessica: Thank you Emma, I still can't believe it, I didn’t think so many people would appreciate my work.
E: So I’ve heard you are touring the UK this year where are you looking forward to playing at?
J: Well obviously Wembley, because the atmosphere is so amazing but to be honest I love playing every where just to perform to my amazing fans.
E: Have you had any problems in the past at gigs?
J: Well there was a where I was playing at the 02 in Newcastle and I crowd surf with a dress on, yeh I think everyone that day felt my bum. I haven’t crowd surfed since.
E: Wow sounds like you have lots of fun at gigs then.
J: Yup there my favourite part of being a musician, connecting with my fans and watching them sing and dance to my music. I love it.
E: So what inspired you to become a musician?
J: Well I think it was from an early age, I’ve always had an interest in music festivals and my dad used to always take me to Glastonbury when I was old enough and I realised then one day I would get up on that stage and perform just like the inspirational people who had before me.
E: Does your Dad and family come see you at gigs, I bet he’s really proud.
J: Yeh he does all the time and he’s so proud. So proud, it’s embarrassing he’s tells strangers that I’m his daughter all the time, just random people in Tesco.
E: Awhhh, have you wrote any songs about any of your family members in your new album?
J: No I haven’t I think the songs are more to do about love and loss of love in a sense of long meaningful relationships with past lovers.
E: Yes like your song lost forever, was that about a past relationship.
J: Yes it was, a very long one and we decided to go our separate ways and then we meet up a few years later and he just felt like someone that I used to know, it was odd I no longer had any feelings for him, he felt like a stranger.
E: That sad are you friends now?
J: Well we are but our lives are so busy it’s hard to make time for anyone at the minute.
E: Anyway let’s get back to a positive note, so are you excited for the NME awards?
J: Yes I can’t wait it’s my first time and I’m so excited, I don’t mind if I don’t win anything I’m just glad to go.
E: I’m excited about it to, I’m presenting it. Who are you on a table with?
J: I’m on a table with The Horrors and my best friends Cara.
E: You’re quite close with the horrors aren’t you?
J: Yes I am, we were both signed by XL Recording and we just became friends from there.
E: So I heard you are in the best newcomer in music for the NME Awards. How are you feeling about that?
J: I’m really chuffed; I was so surprised when I found out.
E: Well you deserve it and you have worked really hard to get where you are today. And I will see you at the NME Awards. Thank you, Jessica.
J: Yup see you there and thanks Emma.
